Sony DRM Class Action Settlement Approved

Under the terms of the approved settlement, purchasers, recipients and users of CDs containing certain digital rights management software can file a claim and receive benefits including a replacement CD, free music downloads or an additional cash payment.

French Supreme Court Overturns Ruling Permitting Private Copying Of DVDs

According to the news story, the Cour de Cassation (Supreme Court of Appeal) overturned a 2005 appeals court decision holding that the use of encryption on DVDs infringed the right of consumers under French copyright law to make copies for private use.

Movie Studios Sue Samsung Over Sale Of DVD Recorder Lacking Effective DRM

A group of U.S. movie studios filed suit against Samsung, apparently claiming that a DVD player sold by the company allowed users to bypass encryption features that prevented unauthorized duplication of DVDs.

Bill To Close Analog Hole Introduced In House

The "Digital Transition Content Security Act of 2005," H.R. 4569, "to require certain analog conversion devices to preserve digital content security measures," is sponsored by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner (R. WI) and co-sponsored by Rep. John Conyers (D. MI). Rep. Sensenbrenner is chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary.
